Preparatory Year Program

The Preparatory Year Program at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals is a program designed to help new and continuing students transition into university life.

The PYP aims to ensure that students attain the level of proficiency in academia necessary to participate fully as KFUPM students. While academic skills are important, PYP provides students not only with a sound basis in academic skills but also seeks to develop students into well-rounded individuals. The curriculum is designed to ensure that each student maintains a sense of pride in his native culture.

The PYP has three main programs—Prep-Science and Engineering Program, Prep-Math Program, and Prep-English Program.

Prep-Math Program ( PMP )

The PYP Mathematics is one of the three departments that made up the KFUPM PYP. The prime aspiration of the unit is to provide challenging academic programs designed to prepare and reinforce the newly admitted student's knowledge of mathematical and analytical skills for success in advanced studies leading to careers in science, engineering, technology, environmental, or management studies at the University.

The program consists of three pre-Calculus courses, Math001, Math002, and Math012 meticulously designed to fulfill the basic needs of all future courses and help students build a solid basic background in Math. Students develop their interest and eagerness about the subject by learning different mathematical techniques and skills. Various exercises and practices are used to make students fluent in fundamental mathematical concepts that improve their capabilities of reasoning and analysis thus enabling them to solve complex real-life science and engineering problems. It is ensured that students acquire vital skills and knowledge required to progress successfully in any discipline of their choice.

In addition to traditional teaching techniques, its experienced faculty members have adopted a variety of educational innovations in teaching mathematics using the latest educational authoring tools. These include Jigsaw classrooms, flipped classrooms, collaborative classrooms, Team-Based Learning (TBL), and Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL), among others. To further enhance the student’s interest, different mathematics competitions are organized in conjunction with the Student’s Success Center.
